Nikon S9 Camera Instructions

Nikon coolpix S9 on Time Lapse

The S9 is a 6.1 megapixel camera with many options. It has a 3X zoom and uses SD card memory of up to 4 gigabytes. An image can be up to 2 megabytes in size. The LCD is easy to break and the buttons are tiny, but it takes great pictures and has both individual time lapse and movie time lapse modes. It is still being supported by Nikon and can be purchased economically (used)

the buttons

There are three buttons and a lever on top and there are four buttons and a navigation control on the back. The battery and the SD card access are on the bottom.

The top The on/off is the second button and a green indicator briefly comes on when there is activity. The third long button is the shutter and has two positions, the half way position starts the auto focus (box in the screen turns green when in focus and red if a malfunction occurs). The lever is the zoom control and the left hand tiny button is the portrait button. If it is on, a square box with a happy face flashes. Press the tiny button to turn off this option because it makes the flash go off multiple times.

The Back the top button views the pictures taken (when pressed), press again to go back to take pictures. the mode button has four options, regular pictures, movie, audio and scene. The round buttons are navigation buttons for the menu and mode buttons. They are also selectors for flash options, self timer and close up. The menu button has different options for different modes and the trash can button is the delete key.

When the camera is first turned on, the green light on top flashes briefly and music plays as the camera starts. The LCD shows the mode in the upper left corner, status in the upper right, picture size or movie type in the lower left and pictures remaining in the lower right. most of this info goes away unless the shutter button is pressed halfway (focus) and then the info appears briefly again.

The time lapse option is accomplished by setting the mode to normal (top option) and in the shooting menu options select continuous, interval timing option. The interval can be every 30 seconds, one minute, 5 or 10 minute. 30 seconds works very well. another option behind the continuous option is single shots.

lets try it !!!

turn on the camera, select single pictures, take a few snapshots, change the shooting options to time lapse, press the shutter to start and let it run for a few minutes. press the shutter again to stop and turn off the camera. remove the SD card, plug into the computer (adapter if needed), open a new subdirectory, upload the pictures and view them. When done with the card, select remove card on the bottom of the screen and remove the card when the computer says it is safe to do so. Never insert or remove a card when it is being accessed by the computer or when the camera is turned on.
